Feedback from presenting my project

Image
In Monday's class, we were presenting our ideas and concepts for a major project. This form shows the opinion of my classmates about my project. Here are the results:

Presentation

This presentation describes the concept and ideas that came to my head while sketching and researching. I will be presented it to my classmate to get feedback. It shows the artists I was inspired by, preparing the workspace and process of creating my work.

Acrylic painting - testing style and techniques

Image
Searching for information about Jean Michel Basquiat, I have tried to create a painting similar to his work. I haven't planned or sketched any aspect of my work. During this piece, I have tried to use as many techniques as possible such as paint by hand. Unfortunately, I didn't have spray paint to experiment as Basquiat used in his works. I'm satisfied with the final outcome and looking forward to start the major project using his style. I think it could be a good decision to change the concept and try to create a final piece for a major project in a completely different style.

Jean Michel Basquiat

Image
Jean Michel Basquiat was an American artist born in 1960. he created over 2000 paintings which some of them focus on the social aspects and discrimination in the US. His paintings are maximalist and include hidden meanings, text and symbols that might be interpreted in different ways. He usually worked on a few pieces at the same time, creating a full of emotional pieces using a load of techniques and colours. After Warhol's death, Basquiat's works became darker and more disturbing. Overreacting anger into art.  During the reseach i discover many techniques he used and i decided to use his works as a main references for my project. He inspired me to experiment so that i decided to buy spray paint (as he used in some of his works) and use hands.

Tutorial feedback

Image
Having a tutorial, I presented my sketch and discussed my project with the tutor. Showing my sketches, I got permission to improvise my work, keeping the chosen theme and the general concept of my work which is sleep paralysis. Also, the tutor suggested doing artist research about artists such as Jean Michel Basquiat which is more related to the current ideas of my work.

Ink drawing - sketches

Image
The drawings below present my quick sketches while I was working on facial expressions and the concept of my major project. To create these drawings, I used ink and brash mostly, besides some of the faces, when I used fine liners. I mixed styles and techniques inspired by artists such as Picasso during this task. The main reason for this task were improvisation by drawing every idea that came to my head and creating as many drawings as possible.

Artist Research - Harry Simmonds

Image
Planning my project, I have been looking for artists who specialised in Ink drawings, and the one that kept my eye was Harry Simmonds. He is a British artist born in 1978 in Bristol. Most of his works present human bodies or portraits created in a very specific style. Simmonds created his own style of drawing by using ink and white acrylic paints on separate sheets. The techniques used in the drawings give a dynamic in its unusual form. 'Head of Mike 2'  89.5 x 70 cm approx. Ink and Acrylic on Paper. 'Head of George 1'  99.4 x 70 cm. Ink and Acrylic on Paper. During the research for my ink drawing, I decided to create my piece on separate A4 watercolour sheets like Harry Simmonds. Another interesting aspect of his works is the presented facial expressions. As my drawings will include many faces, I think Simmonds's works might be a great reference in finalising my piece.

SMART Objective

My project will present sleep paralysis in expressionism. The main concept of my work is to present the dark characters around the sleeping person doing different activities based on people's relations that have already experienced it.I will also do the research about sleep paralysis to present my work to the main idea.  My outcomes will be to paint 3 paintings with ink and the other 3 with acrylic paints, these will be related to each other but also able to be seen individually. I can focus on the main elements of my work, such as bodies or facial expressions. The paintings will be done on A2 canvases with acrylic paints. As I need to improve my painting skills, I will spend most of my time on this project. I will work both at home and in the studio to maximise my time organisation.  The work will be presented as a gallery on my website, as a group of work, individually and in detail.
